New style number plates are the current UK registration format, introduced in September 2001 and still in use today. They are designed to clearly display a vehicle’s age and registration period.
This system replaced the prefix format and was created to provide a longer-lasting, more structured registration system as vehicle numbers continued to grow.

A new style number plate follows this format:
[Two Letters] [Two Numbers] [Three Letters]
The system updates twice a year, in March and September, making it easy to determine a vehicle’s age at a glance.
The format was introduced by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to ensure clarity, consistency, and long-term capacity.

New style plates remain the most common choice because they:

New style plates cannot be used to make a vehicle appear newer than it is.
You can only assign a plate with an age identifier that matches the same year or earlier than your vehicle’s registration date.
